2008-05-23 16:11
  From:MOFCOM    Article type:Original

Vice Minister Yi Xiaozhun met with Dr. Geoff Raby, Australian Ambassador to China in Beijing on May 23.

Raby handed over an additional list of rescue materials (worth 1 million Australian dollars or approximately US$ 950,000) of Australian government to the quake-hit areas in Sichuan Province. Among which were special cutting and hoisting equipment, generators, blankets, tarpaulin, convenient oil barrels, water tanks, etc. The foresaid materials would be transported to Chendu on the afternoon of May 23.

Earlier, the Australian government had already provided an emergency aid of 1 million Australian dollars (or US$ 950,000) to the quake-hit areas via the International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) on May 12.

The Wenchuan earthquake has aroused great concern in the international community, and the relevant bilateral and multilateral organizations have committed in succession to provide the aid of rescue and relief funds and materials to China. By ten o’clock of May 23, the relevant international organizations and countries, coordinated by MOFCOM, had provided the quake-hit areas with the emergency aid of US$ 20.55 million or approximately RMB140 million yuan through the existing international aid channels.
